Crabgrass, goat-heads, pigweed, sandburs, what you going to do? They had 30-yr-old black plastic sheeting under gravel, laid when the house was built. Over time it disintegrated & actually caused greenhouse effect, allowing weeds to retain moisture & become large, fat & juicy. They spent hundreds of $ on systemics, weed preventers & other chemicals to no avail. They don't call it crabgrass for nothing. Finally re-landscaped, pulled up the plastic & designated a check area over the densest weeds: put down 7 different brands of weed-control fabric & attached securely with anchor pins. Made small x-cuts in the fabric as if for plants. Left it alone for two months. This product won hands-down! Absolutely no weeds- not a single one- got through, yet rainwater passes through basically. Six months later, still holding up! Forget the chemicals, the pricey wool-type felt or fabric barriers, & the cheesy stuff they sell at Lowe's & Home Depot. This is by far your best bet.
